Product Introduction

Background

McCoy's 5A medium was initially used specifically for the culture of Novikoff Hepatoma cells. Unlike other medium, McCoy's 5A medium contains reduced glutathione, bacterial peptone and high concentrations of glucose. McCoy's 5A is widely used in the culture of primary cells, such as bone marrow, skin, gingiva, kidney, spleen, lung, rat embryo, omentum and so on. In addition, McCoy's 5A medium is also used for tissue biopsy culture, the establishment of cell line, and the culture of some lymphocytes and more difficult cells.
This product contains many kinds of amino acids, vitamins, inorganic salts and other ingredients for cell culture, but does not contain protein, lipids or any growth factors. Therefore, the product should be used with serum or serum-free additives.

FAQs

  • Q:1 If the basic culture medium is frozen at -20℃, will it affect its use?

    Answer

If the cell culture medium is accidentally frozen, observe whether there is precipitation after the medium is naturally thawed. If no precipitation is produced, the medium can be used normally. If precipitation occurs, it is recommended to discard it.

  • Q:2 How long can I keep my culture media after supplementing with serum?

    Answer

Generally speaking, media can be used for up to 3-6 months after supplementation with serum, at 2 to 8℃ low temperature environment preservation.

  • Q:3 My medium was shipped at room temperature but it is supposed to be stored refrigerated. Is it okay?

    Answer

We routinely ship media that require long-term storage in the refrigerator at room temperature. We have done studies on representative media formulations to show that media can be at room temperature for up to a week without a problem.

  • Q:4 How light sensitive is media? Should I also be protecting it from LED light?

    Answer

While we know that different wavelengths of light are worse than others for exposure, we would recommend as a best practice to protect the medium from all forms of light exposure including LEDs, as much as possible to ensure optimal performance, as several components within the medium are light sensitive, such as vitamins. When placed in a light-proof 4°C refrigerator with the door closed, the culture medium will be kept away from light.

  • Q:5 I see a precipitate in my medium, and a change in the pH. What should I do?

    Answer

This is most likely a sign of bacterial or fungal contamination. We would recommend discarding the media, and trying to decontaminate the culture.

  • Q:6 Where can I find the osmolality for Medium?

    Answer

The osmolality is listed in the COA for the particular lot number of the medium.

  • Q:7 Do you provide customized culture media services?

    Answer

Yes. We can customize culture media with reduced components or changes in the concentration of existing components.
