| Background | NCI-H209 [H209] cells were isolated and established in 1979 by A.F. Gazdar and colleagues from a bone marrow metastasis of a patient with small cell lung cancer. The bone marrow specimen was obtained prior to the patient's treatment. NCI-H209 cells are a classic small cell lung cancer cell line expressing high levels of four biochemical markers: neuron-specific enolase, brain-type creatine kinase, L-dopa decarboxylase, and bombesin-like immunoreactivity. The c-myc DNA sequence is not amplified, and no gross structural DNA abnormalities have been found. NCI-H209 cells synthesize p53 mRNA at levels comparable to those in normal lung tissue. NCI-H209 cells grow in suspension as aggregates; only cells within the aggregates are viable, and viability cannot be estimated. Typically, the culture medium contains a large amount of cellular debris. |
