Background HL-60 cells are a promyelocytic cell line. They were established from a 36-year-old Caucasian female diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia. HL-60 cells undergo spontaneous differentiation, a process that can be enhanced by butyrate, hypoxanthine, phorbol ester (PMA), DMSO (1%–1.5%), actinomycin D, and retinoic acid. HL-60 cells exhibit phagocytic activity and respond to chemotactic stimuli. The cells are positive for the myc oncogene.
Tumorigenic Yes, in nude mice (subcutaneous myeloid tumors). Yes, in semi-solid media.
Receptor Expression complement, expressed; Fc, expressed
Gene Expression tumor necrosis factor (TNF), also known as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha, TNF alpha), after stimulation with phorbol myristic acid, myc+
Biosafety Level BSL-1
